Summit, a New Shortbread Flavor & Basil has a Fur Baby

Hello Friends,

I hope that you had a wonderful weekend, and that you didn't melt too much in the heat wave we've experienced this past week.  We have been brushing Basil daily, and I swear that we could either knit a dress, or have a mini Basil when the shedding is over.  Did you know that chickens are uncomfortable when the temperature rises over 80 degrees?  You can imagine what 92 with a heat index of 104 must be like for them, but for Basil it's a whole different level of hot.  We installed box fans in the coops and barn, added ice and electrolytes to water bowls, and provided treats like frozen strawberry tops to try and keep everyone as cool as possible.  We even filled a kiddie pool for poor Basil.  The ducks are lucky, though, because they have their pond and like to make mudpies, so they aren't as inclined to overheat.

Our Rosemary Thyme Shortbread is definitely one of our most popular baked goods.  We've been doing some recipe testing, and have added a Lavender Shortbread that is also quite delicious.  We are still tweaking our savory shortbread with thyme, cheese and black pepper, otherwise known as a sablé.  It is close, so stay tuned!

Lastly, we are so excited to share that this coming Sunday, June 30th,  will be the first of two Sundays (the other is July 14th) that we will be a Guest Vendor at the Summit Farmer's Market.  The Summit Market is one of the top in the state, so we are so grateful to be included with some of the best farms in New Jersey.  The market is open from 8am to 1pm, and we will be bringing baked goods, our eggs, veggies, herbs, flower bouquets, honey, teas, jams & marmalades. The address is 22 Deforest Ave, Summit, NJ 07901.  Their website is https://www.summitdowntown.org/events/farmers-market/

Have a blessed week ahead.  We hope to see you there-

Sincerely,

Michele & The Maranatha Farm Team
