Sheep, Basil's cave & Barncats
Hello Friends,
We hope that you are enjoying these Autumn days as much as we are. It's bittersweet, though, because we really need some rain!
We are happy to report at long last that our three Katahdin ewes have arrived, and they are a delight. Fern, Dahlia and Violet are super friendly and settling into their new home nicely, and have taken quickly to following us around with corn in our buckets from paddock to paddock in keeping with our rotational grazing plan, and then back to the barn at the end of the day for lock-up to keep them safe overnight.
Our older hens are cleaning up the paddocks before the sheep arrive on the scene, as you can see in the photo below.
Basil has also been getting used to his new surroundings, and decided that it would be fun to dig himself a cave below our high tunnel. Luckily, he has also taken to his new house that Sam, Griffin and Mark have built for him. He is out patrolling the lower silvopasture at night, and you can find him in his new digs snoozing come morning.
With our construction projects ending, we decided it would be a good idea to get a few barn cats. We adopted them from Lucky Lives Rescue, and although they are still shy, Cherie and Luca are starting to get used to the idea that this is home. It will be another four weeks until they are allowed out of the barn so that they know they will be fed and cared for here. It will be interesting to see them interact with the chickens, ducks and geese in the barnyard!
We have some new delicious items in our online store:
Blueberry Lemon Basil Jam; our jams are made with honey (not sugar), so you really taste the fruit!
Paw Paw Date Pecan Muffins; Paw Paws are the only native fruit to eastern North America, and it is mind boggling, but they taste like a banana and a mango had a baby. So think banana date nut bread when you think of these muffins. We will be adding a gluten free version next week.
Apple Cinnamon Muffins; a seasonal favorite, including chunks of our very first apple harvest.
The gluten free version is here: GF Apple Cinnamon Muffins
We also have several new herbs and spices, including our freeze dried Genovese basil, onion powder, garlic powder, chives, flat leaf parsley, Mediterranean blend and more.
Wishing you a blessed week ahead. Enjoy these Fall days. It will be the Holidays before we know it! May God shine His grace upon you today and always.
Sincerely,
Michele & the Maranatha Farm Team
